Samuel N. Nahashon is currently serving as Professor and Chair of the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Tennessee State University (TSU). He earned his Ph.D. degree in Poultry Science with Integrated Minor in Biochemistry and Statistics from Oregon State University in 1994. Prof. Nahashon’s role as Department Chair is to provide leadership to the faculty, staff and students in the department, teach poultry science courses, and facilitate implementation of the departmental strategic plan. Prof. Nahashon has also been engaged in poultry nutrition and genomics research for the last 32 years. His research program has mentored 15 high school students, 70+ undergraduate students, 25 Masters and 7 PhD students who published 24 MS theses and 5 PhD dissertations. These students (29) have graduated and now leading successful careers. For the last 15 years at TSU, he has attracted over 9 million dollars in extramural grant funding for research, teaching and outreach as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and as Collaborator. He has published 60 refereed peer reviewed papers in reputable scientific journals, 3 book chapters, and 150+ abstracts and presentations. He is a recipient of numerous fellowships and awards including the Distinguished Research Scientist award (TSU), Outstanding Service Award (Winrock International), STEM Innovation Award (BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness), International Champion Award (TSU) and Research Mentorship awards (TSU). He is a member of several professional societies that include the World Poultry Science Association, Poultry Science Association, International Society of Animal Genetics, and International Association of Food Protection. He is member of several honor societies that include Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Delta, the Agricultural Honor Society, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Prof. Nahashon also serves as Associate editor of the Journal of Poultry Science and reviewer for more than 30 refereed journals and also sits on numerous grant review panels such as USDA-NIFA, USDA-FAS, USDA-SBIR, NIH, and NSF etc. Prof. Nahashon has also been engaged internationally on capacity building and research projects in Kenya, Kuwait, Morocco, and Ghana.
